March Luncheon

$10 – $30

Speaker
Ronald T. Green, Ph.D., P.G.
Southwest Research Institute

Presentation Topic:
Using Remote-Sensed Data to Improve Recharge Estimates

The water resources of arid and semi-arid landscapes face growing challenges due to increased demand of a finite resource. Improved resource management requires expanded data, enhanced conceptual models, and improved analytical and numerical tools to succeed. The use of remote-sensed data from a variety of satellites is being actively explored as a way to improve the chances of success in water resource management and decrease the uncertainty in future decision making. Data and information provided by several recent satellite platforms are evaluated as an opportunity to improve water resource management practices.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Ronald Green is an Institute Scientist in the Geosciences and Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas where he has worked for the past 30 years. His primary activities are in groundwater hydrology and environmental geophysics. Recent work has focused on water availability in south-central and west Texas and the impact of oil and gas activities on water resources. Of particular interest are the water resources of karst limestone aquifers including assessments of recharge, characterization of flow mechanisms, and numerical modeling. Principal aquifers that have been studied include the Edwards, Trinity, Edwards-Trinity, Carrizo-Wilcox, and Leona gravels. Dr. Green is a Fellow in the Geological Society of America and is certified as a Professional Geologist in Texas. He holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Michigan, a B.S. in Geology from Grand Valley State University, an M.S. in Geophysics from the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. in Hydrology from the University of Arizona.
